Isaiah 13:1
JPS 13:1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
TJBU 13:1 THE BURDEN OF THE CUP OF CURSING TO GIVE TO BABYLON TO DRINK, WHICH ISAIAH THE SON OF AMOZ DID PROPHESY.
 
Isaiah 13:2
JPS 13:2 Set ye up an ensign upon the high mountain, Lift up the voice unto them, Wave the hand, that they may go Into the gates of the nobles.
TJBU 13:2 Against the fortified city that dwells securely lift up the ensign, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
 
Isaiah 13:3
JPS 13:3 I have commanded My consecrated ones, Yea, I have called My mighty ones for mine anger, Even My proudly exulting ones.
TJBU 13:3 I have commanded those that are prepared by me, I have also called together my mighty ones, that they may avenge my wrath upon them, my strength, and my praise.
 
Isaiah 13:4
JPS 13:4 Hark, a tumult in the mountains, Like as of a great people! Hark, the uproar of the kingdoms Of the nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts mustereth The host of the battle.
TJBU 13:4 There is a voice of a multitude in the moun tains, like as of a great people: the voice of the tumultuous assembly of kings, of nations being assembled, the Lord of hosts is mustering the armies for battle.
 
Isaiah 13:5
JPS 13:5 They come from a far country, From the end of heaven, Even the LORD, and the weapons of His indignation, To destroy the whole earth.
TJBU 13:5 They are coming from a far coimtry, from the ends of the earth: the Lord and the vessels of the cup of cursing before Him, to destroy all the wicked of the earth.
 
Isaiah 13:6
JPS 13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; As destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
TJBU 13:6 Howl ye, for nigh is the day, ready to come from before the Lord; like spoil from before the Almighty it shall come.

JPS 13:7 Therefore shall all hands be slack, And every heart of man shall melt.
TJBU 13:7 Therefore shall all hands be slackened, and every man's heart shall melt.
 
Isaiah 13:8
JPS 13:8 And they shall be affrighted; Pangs and throes shall take hold them; They shall be in pain as a woman in travail; They shall look aghast one at another; Their faces shall be faces of flame.
TJBU 13:8 They shall be struck with consternation; distress and pangs shall take hold of them; they shall tremble as with the trembling of a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their countenances shall be like flames of fire.

JPS 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, Cruel, and full of wrath and fierce anger; To make the earth a desolation, And to destroy the sinners thereof out of it,
TJBU 13:9 Behold, the day from before the presence of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and He shall destroy the sinners out of it.

JPS 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof Shall not give their light; The sun shall be darkened in his going forth, And the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
TJBU 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constella tions shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth; and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
 
Isaiah 13:11
JPS 13:11 And I will visit upon the world their evil, And upon the wicked their iniquity; And I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, And will lay low the haughtiness of the tyrants.
TJBU 13:11 And I will visit the inhabitants of the world with the punishment for evil, and the wicked for their iniquity: and I will put an end to the greatness of the wicked, and the strength of the mighty I will humble.
 
Isaiah 13:12
JPS 13:12 I will make man more rare than fine gold, Even man than the pure gold of Ophir.
TJBU 13:12 And I will love them that fear me more than gold, in which the sons of men glory; and those that keep the law more than the fine gold of Ophir.
 
Isaiah 13:13
JPS 13:13 Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, And the earth shall be shaken out of her place, For the wrath of the LORD of hosts, And for the day of His fierce anger.
TJBU 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heayens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, from before the presence of the Lord of hosts, and in the day of the fierceness of His anger.

JPS 13:14 And it shall come to pass, that as the chased gazelle, And as sheep that no man gathereth, They shall turn every man to his own people, And shall flee every man to his own land.
TJBU 13:14 And he shall be as a roe chased, and as sheep when there is none to gather them together: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land.
 
Isaiah 13:15
JPS 13:15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; And every one that is caught shall fall by the sword.
TJBU 13:15 Every one that shall be found in her shall be slain, and every one that shall enter into the fortified cities shall be slain by the sword.

JPS 13:16 Their babes also shall be dashed in pieces before their eyes; Their houses shall be spoiled, And their wives ravished.

JPS 13:17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, Who shall not regard silver, And as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
TJBU 13:17 Behold, I am bringing upon them the Medes, who are not impelled by silver; and as for gold, they delight not in it.

JPS 13:18 And their bows shall dash the young men in pieces; And they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; Their eye shall not spare children.
TJBU 13:18 And their bows shall strike through the young men; and they shall not compassionate the child of the womb; their eye shall not spare the children.
 
Isaiah 13:19
JPS 13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldeans' pride, Shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
TJBU 13:19 And Babylon shall become, she that was aforetimes the joy of kings, the beauty of the Chaldeens' excellency, as the overthrow wherewith the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

JPS 13:20 It shall never be inhabited, Neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation; Neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; Neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.
TJBU 13:20 It shall not be inhabited for ever; it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch his tent there, neither shall the shepherds dwell there.
 
Isaiah 13:21
JPS 13:21 But wild-cats shall lie there; And their houses shall be full of ferrets; And ostriches shall dwell there, And satyrs shall dance there.
TJBU 13:21 But the martens shall lodge there; and their houses shall be filled with howling monsters: and there shall the ostriches dwell; and devils shall delight themselves there.
 
Isaiah 13:22
JPS 13:22 And jackals shall howl in their castles, And wild-dogs in the pleasant palaces; And her time is near to come, And her days shall not be prolonged.
TJBU 13:22 The wild cats shall shriek in their palaces; and dragons in the place of the abodes of their luxuries. And nigh to come is the time of the destruction of Babylon, and her days shall not be prolonged.
