Isaiah 42:1
JPS 42:1 Behold My servant, whom I uphold; Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My spirit upon him, He shall make the right to go forth to the nations.
TJBU 42:1 Behold, my servant, the Messiah, whom I bring, my chosen in whom one delights: as for my Word, I will put my Holy Spirit upon Him; He shall reveal my judgment unto the nations.
 
Isaiah 42:2
JPS 42:2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, Nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
TJBU 42:2 He shall not cry aloud, nor raise a clamour, and He shall not lift up His voice in the street.
 
Isaiah 42:3
JPS 42:3 A bruised reed shall he not break, And the dimly burning wick shall he not quench; He shall make the right to go forth according to the truth.
TJBU 42:3 The meek who are like a bruised reed He shall not break, and the poor who are as a glimmering wick with Him, He will not quench: He shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

JPS 42:4 He shall not fail nor be crushed, Till he have set the right in the earth; And the isles shall wait for his teaching.
TJBU 42:4 He shall not faint nor be weary, till He have established judgment in the earth; and the isles shall wait for His law.

JPS 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, He that created the heavens, and stretched them forth, He that spread forth the earth and that which cometh out of it, He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, And spirit to them that walk therein:
TJBU 42:5 Thus saith the God of eternity, who hath created the heavens and suspended them, who hath founded the earth, and hath given breath to its inhabitants, even to the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.
 
Isaiah 42:6
JPS 42:6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, And have taken hold of thy hand, And kept thee, and set thee for a covenant of the people, For a light of the nations;
TJBU 42:6 I, the Lord, I will make Thee to grow in truth, and will hold Thine hand, and I will direct Thee, and give Thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
 
Isaiah 42:7
JPS 42:7 To open the blind eyes, To bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, And them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house.
TJBU 42:7 To open the eyes of the house of Israel, who are blind to the law, to bring back their captivity from among the nations, where they are like prisoners, and to redeem them from the servi tude of the kingdoms being shut up as those that are bound in darkness.

JPS 42:8 I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory will I not give to another, Neither My praise to graven images.
TJBU 42:8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory in which I am revealed to you I will not give to another people; nor my praise to the worshippers of images.

TJBU 42:11 Let the wilderness praise Him, and the cities that are in it, the villages which inhabit the wilderness of the Arabians; let the dead praise Him, when they go forth from their long abodes; from tlie tops of the mountains let them lift up their voice.

Isaiah 42:13
JPS 42:13 The LORD will go forth as a mighty man, He will stir up jealousy like a man of war; He will cry, yea, He will shout aloud, He will prove Himself mighty against His enemies.
TJBU 42:13 The Lord shall be seen to do mighty things: He shall reveal Himself in anger to do a mighty work by the word of His wrath; He shall reveal Himself to His enemies by His might in an earthquake.
 
Isaiah 42:14
JPS 42:14 I have long time held My peace, I have been still, and refrained Myself; Now will I cry like a travailing woman, Gasping and panting at once.
TJBU 42:14 I have given them prolongation for a long time, if they would but return to my law; but they did not return. My judgment shall be re vealed upon them, as pains on a woman in travail; they shall be destroyed, and come to an end together.

JPS 42:18 Hear, ye deaf, And look, ye blind, that ye may see.
TJBU 42:18 Ye wicked, (who are like the deaf,) have ye no ears? hear ye! and ye sinners, (who are like the blind,) have ye no eyes?

JPS 42:19 Who is blind, but My servant? Or deaf, as My messenger that I send? Who is blind as he that is wholehearted, And blind as the LORD'S servant?
TJBU 42:19 Is it not so? if the wicked and the sinners, to whom I have sent my prophets, will repent, they shall be called my servants; but the wicked shall be paid with vengeance for their sins; but if they will repent, they shall be called the servants of the Lord.

JPS 42:20 Seeing many things, thou observest not; Opening the ears, he heareth not.

JPS 42:22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled, They are all of them snared in holes, And they are hid in prison-houses; They are for a prey, and none delivereth, For a spoil, and none saith: 'Restore.'
TJBU 42:22 But this is a people robbed, and spoiled, and all their young men are covered with confusion, and shut up in prison-houses: they are for a prey, and there is none who delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

JPS 42:23 Who among you will give ear to this? Who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

JPS 42:24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? Did not the LORD? He against whom we have sinned, And in whose ways they would not walk, Neither were they obedient unto His law.
TJBU 42:24 Who delivered Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord? Because they have sinned against Him; and they would not walk in His righteous paths before Him, neither would they receive the instruction of His law.

JPS 42:25 Therefore He poured upon him the fury of His anger, And the strength of battle; And it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not, And it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
