The following is more in keeping with the "scientific" aspect of this
question of the four living creatures of Ezekiel One. It's rather long,
but I didn't know what to cut.

Ezekiel's Vision of Wheels Within Wheels

Looking up at the sky, he first saw a whirlwind come out of the north. It
quickly fanned out a great doughnut shaped cloud of asteroids around the
outside edges, framing an inner picture of four wheels within the wheels
with one bright fiery hub. The whole scene represented the inner part of
our solar system from its center out beyond the orbit of Mars where a former
planet exploded and formed our asteroid belt.

In the middle was the radiant sun, "a fire infolding itself, and a brightness
[nogah, sunlight] was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour
of amber."

Spaced at wing tip to wing tip intervals between the sun and the asteroid
belt were four flying planetary bodies whose orbits formed concentric
circles, wheels within wheels, rings, orbs, about the hub where fire flared
and fell back on itself. In chapter 10 (margin, New Scofield Bible), Ezekiel
called them whirling wheels [galgal, heaven, circular, rollings things; i.e.,
heavenly planetary orbits]."

Verse 16 says that all "four had one likeness," so they all look like coals
of fire. All four had "the likeness of a man [adam, red earth, i.e., clay
soil]." Since one is the Earth, all have clay soil, and all orbit between
the sun and the asteroid belt, they are the terrestrial planets, Mercury,
Venus, Earth and Mars, shining in the sunlight.

The word chajoth, translated "living creatures," means lively things. These
lively things are rotating planetary bodies flying at great speed through
space, each in its own orbit.

"And their feet [extremities, limbs; astronomer's call the edge of a
celestial disk its limb]; were straight [yashar, smooth] feet; and the
sole [kaph, curve] of their feet [outer edges] was like the sole of a
calf's foot [round]; and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass."
In other words, the curve of their outer edges looked smooth and round. All
four planets are round and sparkle in the sunlight.

"And every one had four faces." The four faces Ezekiel described are those
that were on the banners placed at the compass points around the Tabernacle
in the desert. They represent the four directions: the eagle north, the man
south, the lion east, and the ox west. Each round flying celestial full orb
[sphere] faces all four directions.

And "every one had four wings." Whatever these wings represent, the Earth
has them. The same word, kanaph, which means quarters, is translated
"corners," in Isaiah 11:12: "the four corners of the earth." Green's
Interlinear Hebrew/Greek-English Bible has "four wings of the earth."
We now have photographic proof of what the wingless Earth looks like from
space. Its four "wings" or "corners" are actually quarters. Earth's
astronomical symbol is a circle divided into four quarters to help us
understand. Each orbiting planetary sphere has four quarters.

They had "the hands [yad, parts, i.e., elements] of a man [adam, red earth]
under [tachath, used of things which are interchanged: in lieu of, instead
of] their wings [kanaph, quarters] on their four sides [reba, fourth parts]."
Each sphere has elements of clay soil on all quarters.

Their flight was not erratic, but smooth and regular, each one aligned with
the others as they swung around in turn to face the four directions. The
Concordant Literal Bible translates verse 17: "when they go, toward one of
their four quarters are they going." This is clearly a circular orbit.

Keeping with this planetary theme and regarding the four faces:

1. Earth - man
2. Mars - lion (Roman god of war)
3. Mercury - eagle (mythically portrayed with winged sandals hat and wand;
graceful; shrewdest and most cunning of the gods--Master Thief [Mythology,
Edith Hamilton])
4. Venus - ox (many extant manuscripts portray Venus as having a "bull's
head. The planet was even called Ashteroth-Karnaim, or Astarte of the Horns,
a name given to a city in Canaan in honor of this deity. The golden calf
worshiped by Aaron and the people at the foot of Sinai was the image of the
star [Venus]." The Egyptians worshiped the planet "in the effigy of a bull."
In Greece there was the cult of the bull which had "a golden cow head with a
star on its brow." In Samoa, natives say "The planet Venus became wild and
horns grew out of her head," and one last example is that astronomical texts
of the Babylonians describe the horns of the planet Venus. [Worlds in
Collision, Immanuel Velikovsky].)

This is astronomer Tycho Brahe's diagram of a stationary (geocentric)
earth with the sun going around daily. It first appeared in 1588, 45 years
after the mathematical model of Copernicus was presented...Though the
whole literate world believes the Copernican model (earth rotating on an
"axis," and orbiting the sun) to be a long-settled scientific fact, the truth
of the matter--as anyone who wants to know can find out--
is quite another story!!
