Numbers 14:1
JPS 14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
ONK 14:1 And all the congregation lifted up and gave (forth) their voice; and all the people wept that night.
PAL 14:1 And all the congregation lifted up and gave forth their voice, and the people wept that night: and it was confirmed (as a punishment) that they should weep on that night(12) in their generations.
     
 
Numbers 14:2
JPS 14:2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness!
ONK 14:2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Mosheh and Aharon; and the whole congregation said to them, that we had died in the land of Mizraim, or that we had died in this wilderness!
PAL 14:2 And all the sons of Israel murmured against Mosheh and Aharon, and said: Would that we had died in the land of Mizraim, or that we may die in this wilderness!
 
 
Numbers 14:3
JPS 14:3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?'
ONK 14:3 And why is the Lord bringing us to this land, that we may fall by the sword, and our wives and our children become a prey? Would it not be better for us to return into Mizraim?
PAL 14:3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword of the Kenaanaah, and our wives and little ones to become a prey? Will it not be better to return into Mizraim?
 
 
Numbers 14:4
JPS 14:4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'
ONK 14:4 And they said, a man to his brother, Let us appoint a chieftain, and go back into Mizraim.
PAL 14:4 And one man said to his brother, Let us appoint a king over us for a chief, and return to Mizraim.
JER 14:4 Let us set a king over us, and go round to Mizraim.
 
Numbers 14:5
JPS 14:5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
ONK 14:5 And Mosheh and Aharon fell upon their faces before all the assembly of the sons of Israel.
PAL 14:5 And Mosheh and Aharon bowed upon their faces before all the congregation of the sons of Israel;

JPS 14:6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.

JPS 14:7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.
ONK 14:7 And they spake to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying: The land, which we passed through to explore it, is a good land, most exceedingly.
PAL 14:7 and spake to the congregation, saying: The land we went to see is an exceedingly good land.
 
 
Numbers 14:8
JPS 14:8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us—a land which floweth with milk and honey.
ONK 14:8 If the Lord hath pleasure in us, even He will bring us into this land, and give us the land which produceth milk and honey.
PAL 14:8 If the Lord hath pleasure in us, He will bring us into this land, and give it us, a land producing milk and honey.
 
 
Numbers 14:9
JPS 14:9 Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'
ONK 14:9 Only be not rebellious against the Word of the Lord, nor be afraid of the people of the land, for they are delivered into our hand; their strength is departed from them, and the Word of the Lord is our helper: fear them not.
PAL 14:9 Only do not rebel against the commandments of the Lord, and you need not fear the people of the land, for they are delivered into our hands; the strength of their power hath failed from them, but the Word of the Lord will be our helper; fear them not.
 
 
Numbers 14:10
JPS 14:10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.
ONK 14:10 But all the congregation said that they would stone them with stones.

And the Glory of the Lord was revealed at the tabernacle of ordinance, unto ail the children of Israel.

PAL 14:10 But all the congregation said they would stone them with stones.
 
 
Numbers 14:11
JPS 14:11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
ONK 14:11 And the Lord said to Mosheh, How long will this people provoke Me, and how long will they disbelieve in My Word, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
PAL 14:11 And the glorious Shekinah of the Lord was revealed in bright clouds at the tabernacle. And the Lord said to Mosheh, How long will this people provoke Me to anger? How long will they disbelieve in My Word, for all the signs I have wrought among them?
 
 
Numbers 14:12
JPS 14:12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'
ONK 14:12 I will smite them with the pestilence and consume them; and will make of thee a people greater and stronger than they.
PAL 14:12 I will strike them with deadly plague and destroy them, and will appoint thee for a people greater and stronger than they.
 
 
Numbers 14:13
JPS 14:13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear—for Thou broughtest up this people in Thy might from among them—
ONK 14:13 But Mosheh said before the Lord, And the Mizraee will hear of it;—for Thou didst bring up by Thy power this people from among them,
PAL 14:13 But Mosheh said, The children of the Mizraee, whom Thou didst drown in the sea, will hear that Thou didst bring up this people from among them by Thy power,
 
 
Numbers 14:14
JPS 14:14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud standeth over them, and Thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;
ONK 14:14 and they will tell unto the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that Thou, Lord, dost dwell in Thy Shekinah among this people, whose eyes behold the glorious Shekinah of the Lord, and that Thy Cloud overshadoweth them, and that in the pillar of the Cloud Thou conductest them in the day, and in the pillar of Fire by night.
PAL 14:14 and will say with exultation to the people of this land, who have heard that Thou art the Lord, whose Shekinah dwelleth among this people, in whose eyes, Lord, the Glory of Thy Shekinah appeared on the mountain of Sinai, and who there received Thy law; and over whom Thy Cloud hath shadowed, that neither heat nor rain might hurt them; and whom in the pillar of the Cloud Thou hast led on by day, that the mountains and hills might be brought low, and the valleys lifted up, and hast guided in the pillar of Fire by night:
 
 
Numbers 14:15
JPS 14:15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying:
ONK 14:15 Now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, the nations who have heard the fame of Thy power will speak, saying:

Numbers 14:16
JPS 14:16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.
ONK 14:16 Because there was not strength (enough) before the Lord to bring this people into the land which He covenanted to them, He hath killed them in the desert.
PAL 14:16 Because there was no (more) strength with the Lord to bring this people into the land which swearing He had promised to them, He hath killed them in the wilderness!
 
 
Numbers 14:17
JPS 14:17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the Lord be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying:
ONK 14:17 And now I beseech, let power be magnified from before the Lord, as Thou hast thus spoken, saying:
PAL 14:17 And now, I beseech Thee, magnify Thy power, Lord, and let mercies be fulfilled upon us, and appoint me for (this) great people, as Thou hast spoken, saying:
 
 
Numbers 14:18
JPS 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
ONK 14:18 The Lord is far from anger, and great in performing goodness and truth: forgiving iniquity and rebellion and sins, pardoning them who return unto His law: but acquitting not them who will not turn, (but) visiting the sins of the fathers upon the rebellious children unto the third and unto the fourth generation.
PAL 14:18 The Lord is long-suffering, and nigh in mercy, forgiving sins and covering transgressions, justifying such as return to His law; though them who turn not He will not absolve, but will visit the sins of wicked fathers upon rebellious children unto the third and fourth generation.
JER 14:18 The Lord is long-suffering, far from anger, near in mercy, multiplying the exercise of goodness and truth; though the Lord will not justify sinners, but will remember, in the day of judgment, the guilt of wicked fathers upon rebellious children.
 
Numbers 14:19
JPS 14:19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'
ONK 14:19 Pardon, I beseech, the sins of this people according to the amplitude of Thy goodness, and as Thou hast forgiven(25) this people from Mizraim until now.
PAL 14:19 Pardon now the sin of this people according to Thy great goodness, even as Thou hast forgiven them from the time that they came out from Mizraim until now.
 
 
Numbers 14:20
JPS 14:20 And the LORD said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word'
ONK 14:20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word.
PAL 14:20 And the Lord said, I have forgiven, according to thy word.
JER 14:20 And the Word of the Lord said, Behold, I have absolved and pardoned, according to thy word.
 
Numbers 14:21
JPS 14:21 But in very deed, as I live—and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD—
ONK 14:21 Yet, as I live, with the glory of the Lord shall all the earth be filled.
PAL 14:21 Nevertheless, by oath have I sworn that the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
 
 
Numbers 14:22
JPS 14:22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice;
ONK 14:22 Because all these men who have seen My glory, and the signs I wrought in Mizraim and in the desert, but have tempted before Me these ten times, and have not been obedient to My Word,—
PAL 14:22 Because all the men who have beheld My glory, and My signs, which I have wrought in Mizraim and in the Desert, have tempted Me now ten times, and have not obeyed My Word: by oath have I said this,
 
 
Numbers 14:23
JPS 14:23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it.
ONK 14:23 if they shall see the land which I covenanted to their fathers, nor shall any see it who have provoked before Me.
PAL 14:23 That they shall not see the land which I covenanted to their fathers; and the generation which have been provokeful before me shall not behold it.
JER 14:23 For I have uplifted My hand with an oath.
 
Numbers 14:24
JPS 14:24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
ONK 14:24 But My servant Kaleb, for that there was in him another spirit, and that he hath wholly followed (in) My fear, him will I bring into the land whither he went, and his children shall possess it.—
PAL 14:24 But My servant, Kaleb, because there is in him another spirit, and he hath entirely followed (in) My fear, him will I bring into the land to which he went, and his children shall possess it.
 
 
Numbers 14:25
JPS 14:25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'
ONK 14:25 Now the Amalkaah and the Kenaanaah dwelt in the valley.—Tomorrow, turn you and get you to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Suph.
PAL 14:25 But the Amalekites and Kenaanites dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

JPS 14:26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying:

JPS 14:27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me.
ONK 14:27 How long shall this evil congregation be murmuring against Me? The murmuring of the sons of Israel which they murmur against Me is heard before Me.
PAL 14:27 How long (shall I bear with) this evil congregation who gather together against Me? The murmurs of the sons of Israel which they murmur against Me are heard before Me.
 
 
Numbers 14:28
JPS 14:28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you:
ONK 14:28 Say to them, As I live, saith the Lord, even as ye have spoken before Me, so will I do to you.
PAL 14:28 Say to them, By oath I decree that according to (what) you have spoken, so will I do to you.
 
 
Numbers 14:29
JPS 14:29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;
ONK 14:29 In this wilderness shall your carcases fall, and all who are numbered of you, of all your numbers, from one of twenty years and upward who have murmured against me—

Numbers 14:30
JPS 14:30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
ONK 14:30 if you shall come into the land in which I covenanted in My Word to cause you to dwell, except Kaleb bar Jephuneh, and Jehoshua bar Nun.
PAL 14:30 By a fast oath (have I sworn) that you shall not enter into the land which I covenanted in My Word to give you to inhabit, except Kaleb bar Jephunneh and Jehoshua bar Nun.

Numbers 14:33
JPS 14:33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.
ONK 14:33 and your children shall go about in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your iniquities until your carcases be laid in the wilderness.
PAL 14:33 Yet your children will have to wander in this wilderness forty years, and bear your sins until the time that your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

JPS 14:34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure.
ONK 14:34 According to the number of the days in which you explored the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, you shall receive for your sins, even forty years, and you shall know (the consequence of) your murmuring against me.(26)
PAL 14:34 According to the number of the days in which you were exploring the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, you shall receive for your sins, forty years, and shall know (the consequence) of your murmuring against Me.
 
 
Numbers 14:35
JPS 14:35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'
ONK 14:35 I, the Lord, have made the decree in My Word,—if I will not do unto all this evil congregation who have gathered together against Me; in this wilderness shall they find their end, and here shall they die.
PAL 14:35 I the Lord have decreed in My Word,—if I have not made a decree in My Word against all this evil congregation who have gathered a rebel against Me in this wilderness, that they shall be consumed and die there.
 
 
Numbers 14:36
JPS 14:36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
ONK 14:36 And the men whom Mosheh sent to search the land, and who returned to make all the congregation murmur against him, by bringing forth an evil name upon the land;
PAL 14:36 But the men whom Mosheh had sent to explore the land, and who returning had made the whole congregation murmur against him, by bringing forth an evil report of the land,
 
 
Numbers 14:37
JPS 14:37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
ONK 14:37 those men who brought out the evil name upon the land died by the plague before the Lord.
PAL 14:37 (even those) men who had brought forth the evil of the report of the land died, on the seventh day of the month of Elul, with worms coming from their navels, and with worms devouring their tongues; and were buried in death from before the Lord.

JPS 14:38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.
ONK 14:38 But Jehoshua bar Nun and Kaleb bar Jephuneh lived, of those men who went to explore the land.
PAL 14:38 Only Jehoshua bar Nun and Kaleb bar Jephunneh survived of those men who had gone to explore the land.

JPS 14:39 And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.

JPS 14:40 And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: 'Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised; for we have sinned.'
ONK 14:40 And they arose in the morning to go up to the top of the mountain, saying: Behold, we will go up to the place of which the Lord hath spoken; for we have sinned.
PAL 14:40 And they arose in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying: Behold, we will go up to the place of which the Lord hath spoken; for we have sinned.
 
 
Numbers 14:41
JPS 14:41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper?
ONK 14:41 But Mosheh said, Wherefore do you transgress against the decree of the Word of the Lord? But it will not prosper.
PAL 14:41 But Mosheh said, Why will you act against the decree of the Word of the Lord? But it will not prosper with you.
 
 
Numbers 14:42
JPS 14:42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies.
ONK 14:42 Go not up, for the Shekinah of the Lord is not among you, and be not broken before your enemies.
PAL 14:42 Go not up, for the Lord's Shekinah dwelleth not among you; and the ark, the tabernacle, and the Cloud of Glory proceed not; and be not crushed before your enemies.
 
 
Numbers 14:43
JPS 14:43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD will not be with you.'
ONK 14:43 For the Amalkaah and the Kenaanaah are there before you, and you will fall by the sword; for, because you have turned away from the service of the Lord, the Word of the Lord will not be your helper.
PAL 14:43 For the Amalekites and Kenaanites are there prepared for you, and you will fall slaughtered by the sword. For, because you have turned away from the service of the Lord, the Word of the Lord will not be your Helper.
 
 
Numbers 14:44
JPS 14:44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
ONK 14:44 Yet they would commit the wickedness of going up to the summit of the mountain, though the ark of the Lord's covenant, and Mosheh, removed not from the midst of the camp.
PAL 14:44 But they armed themselves in the dark before the morning, to go up to the height of the mountain: but the ark, in which was the covenant of the Lord, and Mosheh, stirred not from the midst of the camp.
 
 
Numbers 14:45
JPS 14:45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.
ONK 14:45 And the Amalkaah and the Kenaanaah who dwelt in the mountain came down and smote them, and pursued them unto Hormah.
PAL 14:45 And the Amalekites and Kenaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and slaughtered and destroyed them, and drave them hard to destruction.
