JPS 42:1 Now Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons: 'Why do ye look one upon another?'

JPS 42:2 And he said: 'Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.'
ONK 42:2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that corn is sold in Mizraim: go down thither, and buy us from thence, and we shall live, and not die.

JPS 42:3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn from Egypt.

GENESIS 42:4

GENESIS 42:5
JPS 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Caanan.
ONK 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among them who came; for the famine was in the land of Kenaan.
PAL 42:5 And the sons of Israel went every one by one door, lest the evil eye should have sway over them, as they went together to buy among the Kenaanites who went also to buy; because the famine was in the land of Kenaan.
 
GENESIS 42:6
JPS 42:6 And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down to him with their faces to the earth.
ONK 42:6 And Joseph, who was ruler over the land, was he who sold the corn to all the people of the earth. And the brothers of Joseph came, and bowed before him with their faces upon the ground.
PAL 42:6 And Joseph was ruler over the land; and he knew that his brethren had come to buy; for he had appointed notaries at the gates of the city to register daily, of every one who came, his name and the name of his father; and he it was who sold corn to all the people of the land.

And the brethren of Joseph came. And they looked through all the streets, and public places, and hospices, but could not find Him. And they came unto his house, and worshipped him with their faces to the ground.

 
GENESIS 42:7
JPS 42:7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: 'Whence come ye?' And they said: 'From the land of Canaan to buy food.'
ONK 42:7 And Joseph saw his brothers, and knew them, and considered what he should say to them. And he spake with them severely, and said to them, Whence come you? And they said, From the land of Kenaan, to buy corn.
PAL 42:7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and recognised them; but he made himself as a stranger in their eyes, and spake hard words to them, and said to them, Whence come you? And they said, From the land of Kenaan, to buy corn.
 
GENESIS 42:8
JPS 42:8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew him not.
ONK 42:8 And Joseph knew his brothers, but they did not know him.
PAL 42:8 Now Joseph recognised his brethren, because, when separated from them, they had the token of the beard; but they did not recognise him, because (at that time) he had not the token of the beard, and at this hour he had it.
 
GENESIS 42:9
JPS 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them: 'Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.'
ONK 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed of them; and he said to them, You are spies; to see the ruin(214) of the land are you come.
PAL 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, You are spies: to see the nakedness of the shame of the land are you come.

JPS 42:10 And they said unto him: 'Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
ONK 42:10 And they said, No, my lord (ribboni), thy servants are come to buy corn.

GENESIS 42:11
JPS 42:11 We are all one man's sons; we are upright men, thy servants are no spies.'
ONK 42:11 We are all the sons of one man. Right (men) are we; thy servants are not spies.

GENESIS 42:12
JPS 42:12 And he said unto them: 'Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.'
ONK 42:12 But he said to them, No, but you are come to see the ruin of the land.
PAL 42:12 But he said to them, No, but to see the nakedness of the shame of the land are you come.
 
GENESIS 42:13
JPS 42:13 And they said: 'We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.'
ONK 42:13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man, in the land of Kenaan; and, behold, the youngest is with our father to-day, and one is not!
PAL 42:13 They answered, Thy servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man, in the land of Kenaan; and, behold, the youngest is to-day with our father, and one went from us, and we know not what hath been in his end!

JPS 42:14 And Joseph said unto them: 'That is it that I spoke unto you, saying: Ye are spies.
ONK 42:14 And Joseph said to them, That is what I have told you, saying, You are spies;

GENESIS 42:15
JPS 42:15 Hereby ye shall be proved, as Pharaoh liveth, ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
ONK 42:15 by this you shall be proved: by the life of Pharoh you shall not go hence, until your youngest brother be come hither.
PAL 42:15 By that word you shall be proved. (By) the life of Pharoh you shall not go hence unless your youngest brother be brought hither.

JPS 42:16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be bound, that your words may be proved, whether there be truth in you; or else, as Pharaoh liveth, surely ye are spies.'
ONK 42:16 Send one of you, and bring your brother; but you shall be bound, and your words shall be proved, whether you have spoken the truth; if not, by the life of Pharoh, you are spies.
PAL 42:16 Send one of you, and bring your brother; but you shall be bound, and your words be proved if the truth is with you: and if not, (by) the life of Pharoh you are spies.
 
GENESIS 42:17
JPS 42:17 And he put them all together into ward three days.

JPS 42:18 And Joseph said unto them the third day. 'This do, and live; for I fear God:

JPS 42:19 if ye be upright men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses;

GENESIS 42:21
JPS 42:21 And they said one to another: 'We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.'
ONK 42:21 And they said, a man to his brother, We are verily guilty concerning our brother; that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he implored us, and we would not hearken to him: therefore is this distress come upon us.
PAL 42:21 And they said, a man to his brother, In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, when we saw the distress of his soul, when he entreated us, and we would not hearken to him; therefore hath this affliction come upon us.
 
GENESIS 42:22
JPS 42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying: 'Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.'
ONK 42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Did not I tell you, saying, Do not sin against the youth? but you would not hearken. Thus, behold, his blood is required.
PAL 42:22 And Reuben answered them and said, Did I not tell you, saying, Do not sin against the youth? But you would not listen to me; and thus, behold, his blood is required of us.
 
GENESIS 42:23
JPS 42:23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for the interpreter was between them.
ONK 42:23 But they knew not that Joseph heard; for there was an interpreter between them.
PAL 42:23 But they knew not that Joseph understood (heard) the holy language; for Menasheh was interpreter(115) between them.

JPS 42:24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
ONK 42:24 And he turned himself away from them, and wept. And he returned and spake to them, and took Shemeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.
PAL 42:24 And he withdrew from them and wept, and returned and spake with them. And from them he took Shimeon, who had counselled them to kill him, and bound him before them.

JPS 42:25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and thus was it done unto them.
ONK 42:25 And Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with corn, and return their money (that of each) man in his sack, and give them food in the way. And he did so by them.
PAL 42:25 And Joseph commanded his servant to fill their vehicles with corn, and to return each man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the way. And he did so for them.

JPS 42:26 And they laded their asses with their corn, and departed thence.

JPS 42:28 And he said unto his brethren: 'My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack.' And their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying: 'What is this that God hath done unto us?'
ONK 42:28 and he said to his brothers, My money is returned, and, behold, it is in my package. And the knowledge of their hearts failed, and they were each of them confounded, saying, What is this which the Lord hath done to us?
PAL 42:28 And he said to his brothers, My money is returned, behold, it is in my pannier. And knowledge failed from their hearts, and each wondered with his brother, saying, What is this which the Lord hath done, and not for sin of ours?
 
GENESIS 42:29
JPS 42:29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying:

JPS 42:31 And we said unto him: We are upright men; we are no spies.

GENESIS 42:34
JPS 42:34 And bring your youngest brother unto me; then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are upright men; so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffic in the land.'
ONK 42:34 and bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that you are not spies: and when you (will be proved to) be true men, I will give up your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.
PAL 42:34 and bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that you are not spies, but faithful. I will (then) restore your brother to you, and you shall transact business in the land.
 
GENESIS 42:35
JPS 42:35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
ONK 42:35 And it was, as they emptied their sacks, behold, each man's money was bound up in his sack; and when they and their father saw the envelopes of their money, they were afraid.
PAL 42:35 And it was as they emptied their baggages, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his baggage; and they and their father saw the bundles of money, and they were afraid on account of Shimeon whom they had left there.
 
GENESIS 42:36
JPS 42:36 And Jacob their father said unto them: 'Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; upon me are all these things come.'
ONK 42:36 And Jakob their father said to them, Me have you made desolate; Joseph is not, and Shemeon is not (here), and Benjamin you would take away; upon me are all these!
PAL 42:36 And Jakob their father said to them, Me have you bereaved! Of Joseph you said, An evil beast hath devoured him; of Shimeon you have said, The king of the land hath bound him; and Benjamin you seek to take away: upon me is the anguish of all of them.
JER 42:36 And Jakob their father said to them, Me have you bereaved of Joseph. From the hour that I sent him to you I have not known what was his end; and Benjamin you are seeking to take. Yet by me are to arise the twelve tribes.

JPS 42:37 And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying: 'Thou shalt slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.'
ONK 42:37 And Reuben spake with his father, saying, Thou shalt put my two children to death if I do not bring him back to thee. Deliver him into my hand, and I will return him to thee.
PAL 42:37 And Reuben spake to his father, saying, Slay my two sons with a curse(116) if I do not bring him to thee. Give him into my hand, and I will restore him to thee.
 
GENESIS 42:38
JPS 42:38 And he said: 'My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left; if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
ONK 42:38 But he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone remains; and if death should befall him in the way in which you will go, you will bring down my grey hairs with mourning unto Sheol.
PAL 42:38 But he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone remains of his mother; and if death should befall him in the way that you go, you will bring down my age with mourning to the grave. But the famine was strong in the land.
