Numbers 20:1
JPS 20:1 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
ONK 20:1 And the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people abode in Rekem; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
PAL 20:1 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel came to the desert of Zin on the tenth day of the month Nisan. And Miriam died there, and was buried there.
     
 
Numbers 20:2
JPS 20:2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
ONK 20:2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they gathered against Mosheh and against Aharon;
PAL 20:2 And as on account of the innocency of Miriam a well had been given, so when she died the well was hidden, and the congregation had no water. And they gathered against Mosheh and Aharon,
 
 
Numbers 20:3
JPS 20:3 And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before the LORD!
ONK 20:3 and the people were contentious with Mosheh, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died(36) before the Lord!
PAL 20:3 and the people contended with Mosheh, and said, Would that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!
 
 
Numbers 20:4
JPS 20:4 And why have ye brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle?
ONK 20:4 And why have you brought the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle may die here?
PAL 20:4 And why hast thou brought the congregation of the Lord into this desert, that we and our cattle may die here?
 
 
Numbers 20:5
JPS 20:5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.'
ONK 20:5 And wherefore have you made us come up from Mizraim, to bring us into this evil place? This is not a place ior sowing; here are neither fig trees, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there water to drink.
PAL 20:5 And why didst thou make us come up out of Mizraim, to bring us to this evil place, a place which is not fit for sowing, or for planting fig trees, or vines, or pomegranates, and where there is no water to drink?
 
 
Numbers 20:6
JPS 20:6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
ONK 20:6 And Mosheh and Aharon went up from before the congregation unto the door of the tabernacle of ordinance, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the Lord was revealed to them.
PAL 20:6 And Mosheh and Aharon went from the face of the murmuring congregation to the door of the tabernacle of ordinance, and bowed upon their faces, and the Glory of the Lord's Shekinah was revealed to them.
 
 
Numbers 20:7
JPS 20:7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

Numbers 20:8
JPS 20:8 'Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.'
ONK 20:8 Take the rod, and gather the congregation together, thou and Aharon thy brother, and speak to the Rock, before their eyes, and it shall give its waters; and thou shalt bring forth water for them from the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.
PAL 20:8 Take the rod of the miracles, and gather the congregation, thou, and Aharon thy brother, and both of you adjure the rock, by the Great and manifested Name, while they look on, and it shall give forth its waters: but if it refuse to bring forth, smite thou it once, with the rod that is in thy hand, and thou wilt bring out water for them from the rock, that the congregation and their cattle may drink.
 
 
Numbers 20:9
JPS 20:9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him.
ONK 20:9 And Mosheh took the rod from before the Lord, as He had commanded him.
PAL 20:9 And Mosheh took the rod of the miracles from before the Lord, as He had commanded him.
 
 
Numbers 20:10
JPS 20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?'
ONK 20:10 And Mosheh and Aharon assembled the congregation before the rock; and he said to them: Hear now, rebels! Are we to draw forth water for you from this rock?
PAL 20:10 And Mosheh and Aharon gathered the congregation together before the rock. And Mosheh said to them, Hear now, rebels: is it possible for us to bring forth waier for you from this rock?
 
 
Numbers 20:11
JPS 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
ONK 20:11 And Mosheh lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with the rod two times; and the waters came forth greatly, and the congregation drank and their cattle.
PAL 20:11 And Mosheh lifted up his hand, and with his rod struck the rock two times: at the first time it dropped blood; but at the second time there came forth a multitude of waters. And the congregation and their cattle drank.
JER 20:11 And Mosheh lifted up
 
Numbers 20:12
JPS 20:12 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.'
ONK 20:12 But the Lord spake unto Mosheh and Aharon: Because you have not believed in My Word to sanctify Me in the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land that I have given them.
PAL 20:12 But the Lord spake to Mosheh and Aharon with the oath, Because ye have not believed in My Word,(17) to sanctify Me in the sight of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land that I will give them.
 
 
Numbers 20:13
JPS 20:13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them.
ONK 20:13 These are the Waters of Strife,(37) because the sons of Israel strove before the Lord, and He was sanctified in them.
PAL 20:13 These are the Waters of Contention, where the sons of Israel contended before the Lord on account of the well that had been hidden; and He was sanctified in them, in Mosheh and Aharon, when (the waters) were given to them.
 
 
Numbers 20:14
JPS 20:14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us;
ONK 20:14 And Mosheh sent ambassadors from Rekem to the king of Edom:(38) Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the trouble we have found;
PAL 20:14 Then Mosheh sent messengers from Rekem unto the king of Edom, saying, Thus saith thy brother Israel. Thou hast known all the trouble that hath found us;
 
 
Numbers 20:15
JPS 20:15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers;
ONK 20:15 that our fathers went down into Mizraim, and we dwelt in Mizraim many days, and the Mizraee badly treated us and our fathers.
PAL 20:15 that our fathers went down into Mizraim and dwelt in Mizraim many days, and the Mizraee afflicted us and our fathers.
 
 
Numbers 20:16
JPS 20:16 and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border.
ONK 20:16 And we prayed before the Lord, and He accepted our prayers, and sent an Angel, and brought us out from Mizraim; and, behold, we are in Rekem, a city which is on the side of thy border.
PAL 20:16 And we prayed before the Lord, who heard our prayers, and sent one of the ministering angels to lead us out of Mizraim: and, behold, we are in Rekem, a city built on the side of thy border.
 
 
Numbers 20:17
JPS 20:17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.'
ONK 20:17 Let us now pass through thy country: we will not go through a field or through a vineyard, nor will we drink up the water of the cistern: on the king's highway will we travel; we will not turn to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through thy border.
PAL 20:17 Let us now pass through thy land: we will not seduce virgins, nor carry off the betrothed, nor commit adultery: on the king's highway, under the heavens, we will go forward, and turn not to the right or to the left, to do any injury in the public way while we pass through thy border.
JER 20:17 Let us now pass through thy country. We will do no kind of mischief, neither seduce virgins, nor seek the wives of the men; by the highway of the king we will proceed, nor turn to the right or the left till we have passed through thy coast.
 
Numbers 20:18
JPS 20:18 And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee.'
ONK 20:18 But Edomea said to him, Thou shalt not pass through my border, lest I come out against thee with the slaughtering sword.
PAL 20:18 But Edomea answered him, You shall not go through my coast, lest I come to meet thee with the unsheathed sword.
 
 
Numbers 20:19
JPS 20:19 And the children of Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.'
ONK 20:19 And the sons of Israel said to him, We would go up by the trodden way; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, we will give thee the price of it; we will do nothing evil; upon my feet I will pass through.
PAL 20:19 And Israel said to him, We would go by the king's highway; if we drink thy waters, I and my cattle, I will give thee the price of their value. I will only pass through, without doing wrong.
 
 
Numbers 20:20
JPS 20:20 And he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
ONK 20:20 But he said, Thou shalt not pass through. And Edomea came out to meet him with great force and with a strong hand.
PAL 20:20 But he said, You shall not pass through. And Edomea came out to meet him with a large army and with a strong hand.
 
 
Numbers 20:21
JPS 20:21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
ONK 20:21 So Edomea refused to permit Israel to go through his border; and Israel turned away from him.
PAL 20:21 So Edomea would not suffer Israel to pass through his coast; and Israel turned away from him, because it was commanded from before the Word of the Heavens that they should not set battle in array against them, forasmuch as the time was not yet come when the punishment of Edom should be given into their hands.
JER 20:21 And Israel turned away from them; for so was the commandment of their Father who is in heaven, that they should not set against them the array of war.
 
Numbers 20:22
JPS 20:22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor.
ONK 20:22 And they went forward from Rekem, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to Mount Hor.
PAL 20:22 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from Rekem, aud came nnto Mount Umanom.
 
 
Numbers 20:23
JPS 20:23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying:
ONK 20:23 And the Lord spake to Mosheh and to Aharon at Mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying:
PAL 20:23 And the Lord spake unto Mosheh in the Mount Umanom, on the coast of the land of Edom, saying:
 
 
Numbers 20:24
JPS 20:24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah.
ONK 20:24 Aharon shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My Word at the waters of strife.
PAL 20:24 Aharon shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because you were rebels against My Word at the Waters of Contention.
 
 
Numbers 20:25
JPS 20:25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor.
ONK 20:25 Take Aharon and Elazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;
PAL 20:25 Take Aharon and Elazar his son, and make them come up to Mount Umanom.
 
 
Numbers 20:26
JPS 20:26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.'
ONK 20:26 and strip Aharon of his vestments,and put them upon Elazar his son; and Aharon shall be gathered (to his people), and shall die there.
PAL 20:26 And thou shalt strip Aharon of his vestments, the adornment (glory) of the priesthood, and put them on Elazar his son; but Aharon shall be gathered, and die there.
 
 
Numbers 20:27
JPS 20:27 And Moses did as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
ONK 20:27 And Mosheh did as the Lord commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor before the eyes of all the congregation.
PAL 20:27 And Mosheh did as the Lord commanded him.

And they ascended Mount Umanom, in the view of all the congregatoin.

 
 
Numbers 20:28
JPS 20:28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
ONK 20:28 And Mosheh took off his garments from Aharon, and put them upon Elazar his son. And Aharon died there, on the summit of the mount. And Mosheh and Elazar came down from the mount.
PAL 20:28 And Mosheh stripped Aharon of his vestments, the priestly decoration, and put them on Elazar his son; and Aharon died there on the summit of the mountain, and Mosheh and Elazar came down from the mount.

And when the soul of Aharon was at rest, the Cloud of Glory was lifted up on the first day of the month Ab;

JER 20:28 And Mosheh drew off from Aharon
 
Numbers 20:29
JPS 20:29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
ONK 20:29 And all the congregation saw that Aharon was dead; and all the house of Israel bewailed Aharon thirty days.
PAL 20:29 and all the congregation beheld Mosheh come down from the mountain with rent garments; and he wept and said, Woe unto me, for thee, my brother Aharon, the pillar of Israel's prayers! And they too wept for Aharon thirty days, the men and the women of Israel.
JER 20:29 And all the congregation beheld Mosheh come down from the height of the mountain, with garments rent and dust upon his head, weeping and saying, Woe unto me, for thee, my brother Aharon, the pillar of the prayers of the sons of Israel, who madest atonement for them once every year! In that hour the sons of Israel believed that Aharon was dead; and all the congregation of the children of Israel wept for Aharon thirty days.
