Isaiah 29:1 JPS 29:1 Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add ye year to year, Let the feasts come round! TJBU 29:1 Woe to the altar, the altar which is built in the city in which David dwelt; because of the assembly of the armies which are gathering them selves together against her year by year, because the festivals shall cease. Isaiah 29:2 JPS 29:2 Then will I distress Ariel, And there shall be mourning and moaning; And she shall be unto Me as a hearth of God. TJBU 29:2 And I will distress the city, in which the altar is, and she shall be desolate and empty; and she shall be surrounded before me with the blood of the slain, as the altar is surrounded round about with the blood of the holy sacrifices in the day of the festival. Isaiah 29:3 JPS 29:3 And I will encamp against thee round about, And will lay siege against thee with a mound, And I will raise siege works against thee. TJBU 29:3 And I will encamp against thee with armies; and I will build a fortified camp against thee, and I will cast up a mound against thee. Isaiah 29:4 JPS 29:4 And brought down thou shalt speak out of the ground, And thy speech shall be low out of the dust; And thy voice shall be as of a ghost out of the ground, And thy speech shall chirp out of the dust. TJBU 29:4 And thou shalt be brought low, and shalt speak from beneath the earth, thy words shall gibber from the dust; and thy voice shall come like that of a necromancer out of the ground; yea, thy words shall gibber from the dust. Isaiah 29:5 JPS 29:5 But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, And the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away; Yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly— TJBU 29:5 Moreover the multitude of those scattering thee shall be like small dust, and the tumultuous assembly of the mighty as chaff that passeth away; and there shall be a tumult suddenly. Isaiah 29:6 JPS 29:6 There shall be a visitation from the LORD of hosts With thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, With whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire. TJBU 29:6 Thou shalt be visited with thunder from the Lord of hosts, and with earthquake, and with a great noise; with storm, and tempest, and a flame of devouring fire. Isaiah 29:7 JPS 29:7 And the multitude of all the nations that war against Ariel, Even all that war against her, and the bulwarks about her, and they that distress her, Shall be as a dream, a vision of the night. TJBU 29:7 And the multitude of all the nations, that are gathered together against the city, and the altar which is in her, and all their camps and their armies, that are oppressing her, shall be like a phantom of the night. Isaiah 29:8 JPS 29:8 And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth, But he awaketh, and his soul is empty; Or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh, But he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite— So shall the multitude of all the nations be, That fight against mount Zion. TJBU 29:8 And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, behold, he eateth; but he awakes, and he is in want: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and behold, he is faint, he is spent: so shall the, multitude of all the nations be, that gatiier them selves together against the mountain of Zion. Isaiah 29:9 JPS 29:9 Stupefy yourselves, and be stupid! Blind yourselves, and be blind! Ye that are drunken, but not with wine, That stagger, but not with strong drink. TJBU 29:9 Be astounded, wonder, be ye terrified, and muse, and marvel. They are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with old wine. Isaiah 29:10 JPS 29:10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, And hath closed your eyes; The prophets, and your heads, the seers, hath He covered. TJBU 29:10 Because the Lord shall cast among you a spirit of error; and He shall hide the prophets from you, and He shall hide the scribes, and the teachers, who teach you the instruction of the law. Isaiah 29:11 JPS 29:11 And the vision of all this is become unto you as the words of a writing that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying: 'Read this, I pray thee'; and he saith: 'I cannot, for it is sealed'; TJBU 29:11 And all the prophecy shall be unto you as the words of a sealed book, which if one gives to a man that is learned, saying, "Read this now";' then he shall answer, "I am not able, because it is sealed." Isaiah 29:12 JPS 29:12 and the writing is delivered to him that is not learned, saying: 'Read this, I pray thee'; and he saith: 'I am not learned.' TJBU 29:12 Or should the book be given to one that is not learned, saying, "Read this now," then he shall answer, "I am not learned." Isaiah 29:13 JPS 29:13 And the Lord said: Forasmuch as this people draw near, And with their mouth and with their lips do honour Me, But have removed their heart far from Me, And their fear of Me is a commandment of men learned by rote; TJBU 29:13 Wherefore the Lord hath said: Because I am magnified by the mouth of this people, and with their lips they do honour me, but their heart is far from my fear, and their fear towards me is as the commandment of men teaching them: Isaiah 29:14 JPS 29:14 Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvellous work among this people, Even a marvellous work and a wonder; And the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, And the prudence of their prudent men shall be hid. TJBU 29:14 Therefore, behold, I shall again strike this people with wonderful strokes; the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden. Isaiah 29:15 JPS 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, And their works are in the dark, And they say: 'Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?' TJBU 29:15 Woe unto them that purpose to hide counsel from before the Lord, that their works may be in darkness, and they say, If one sees us, and none takes cognizance of our works. Isaiah 29:16 JPS 29:16 O your perversity! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; That the thing made should say of him that made it: 'He made me not'; Or the thing framed say of him that framed it: 'He hath no understanding?' TJBU 29:16 Why do ye seek to pervert your works? Behold, as the clay in the hand of the potter, thus are ye accounted before me. Is it possible that the clay should say to its maker. Thou hast not made me? or should the creature say to its creator, Thou dost not understand me? Isaiah 29:17 JPS 29:17 Is it not yet a very little while, And Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, And the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest? TJBU 29:17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall turn into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be inhabited by many cities. Isaiah 29:18 JPS 29:18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of a book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. TJBU 29:18 And at that time those that are like the deaf shall hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. Isaiah 29:19 JPS 29:19 The humble also shall increase their joy in the LORD, And the neediest among men shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. TJBU 29:19 And those that have suffered affliction on account of the Word of the Lord shall increase their joy, and the poor of the sons of men shall rejoice in the Word of the holy One of Israel. Isaiah 29:20 JPS 29:20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, And the scorner ceaseth, And all they that watch for iniquity are cut off; TJBU 29:20 For the oppressor is come to an end, and the plunderer is made to cease, and all that rose up early to act violently have come to an end; Isaiah 29:21 JPS 29:21 That make a man an offender by words, And lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, And turn aside the just with a thing of nought. TJBU 29:21 All that declare the sons of men guilty on account of their words. The court of justice that is in the gate seeks to ensnare him, who reproves them with the words of the law. They turn aside the just by false judgment. Isaiah 29:22 JPS 29:22 Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, Neither shall his face now wax pale; TJBU 29:22 Therefore thus hath the Lord said, who hath redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: They of the house of Jacob shall not henceforth be confounded, neither shall their faces henceforth look dismayed. Isaiah 29:23 JPS 29:23 When he seeth his children, the work of My hands, in the midst of him, That they sanctify My name; Yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, And shall stand in awe of the God of Israel. TJBU 29:23 But when they of the house of Jacob shall see the mighty deeds which I shall do for their children, the kindness which I have promised Abraham, and his posterity after him in their own land, they shall sanctify my name among them; they shall say, Holy is the holy One of Jacob; and concerning the God of Israel they shall say, He is mighty. Isaiah 29:24 JPS 29:24 They also that err in spirit shall come to understanding, And they that murmur shall learn instruction. TJBU 29:24 And they who were not taught by the spirit of understanding shall have knowledge; and they who said, All these things are nothing, shall receive instruction.
