GENESIS 37:1
JPS 37:1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan
ONK 37:1 And Jakob dwelt in the land of the habitation of his father, in the land of Kenaan.

GENESIS 37:2
JPS 37:2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.
ONK 37:2 These are the generations of Jakob. Joseph was a son of seventeen years; he kept the flock with his brothers; and he had been brought up with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpha, the wives of his father; and Joseph brought their evil report to his father.
PAL 37:2 These are the generations of Jakob. Joseph was a son of seventeen years. He had come forth from the school, and was a youth brought up with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpha his father's wives. And Joseph brought their evil report; for he had seen them eat the flesh that had been torn by wild beasts, the ears and the tails; and he came and told it to his father.
 
GENESIS 37:3
JPS 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.

JPS 37:4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

GENESIS 37:8
JPS 37:8 And his brethren said to him: 'Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?' And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
ONK 37:8 And his brothers said to him, Is it thy fancy reigning to reign over us? or a shultan, dost thou think to govern us? And they added yet to hate him for his dreams and for his words.

JPS 37:9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said: 'Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream: and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.'

JPS 37:10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him: 'What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down to thee to the earth?'
ONK 37:10 And he described it to his father and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him(187) and said to him, What dream is this that thou hast dreamed? Am I and thy mother and thy brothers to come and worship thee on the earth?
PAL 37:10 And he related it to his father and to his brethren: but his father rebuked him, and said to him, What dream is this that thou hast dreamed? Shall I, and thy mother, and thy brethren, really come and bow before thee to the ground?

JPS 37:11 And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.

JPS 37:13 And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.' And he said to him: 'Here am I.'
ONK 37:13 And Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brothers tend the flock in Shekem? Come, I will send thee to them. And he said, Behold me.
PAL 37:13 And it was at the time of days that Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed in Shekem? But I am afraid lest the Hivaee come and smite them, because they smote Hamor and Shekem and the inhabitants of the city. Come now, and I will send thee to them. And he said, Behold me.
 
GENESIS 37:14
JPS 37:14 And he said to him: 'Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me back word.' So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
ONK 37:14 And he said to him, Go now, and see the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock, and return me word. And he sent him from the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shekem.
PAL 37:14 And he said, Go, see the welfare of your brethren, and the welfare of the flock, and return me word. But he sent him according to the deep counsel which was spoken to Abraham in Hebron; for on that day began the captivity of Mizraim.

And Joseph arose, and came to Shekem.

JPS 37:15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying: 'What seekest thou?'
ONK 37:15 And a man found him, and, behold, he wandered in the field. And the man inquired of him, saying, Whom seekest thou?

JPS 37:16 And he said: 'I seek my brethren. Tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding the flock.'

JPS 37:17 And the man said: 'They are departed hence; for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothan.' And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

PAL 37:17 And the man said, They have journeyed hence: for I heard beyond the Veil, that, behold, from to-day would begin the servitude to the Mizraee; and it was said to them in prophecy, that the Hivaee would seek to set battle in array against them. Therefore, said they, we will go unto Dothan.

JPS 37:18 And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
ONK 37:18 And they saw him from afar; and before he came nigh, they devised against him to kill him.
PAL 37:18 And Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan. And they saw him from afar, before he had come nigh to them, and plotted against him to kill him.
 
GENESIS 37:19
JPS 37:19 And they said one to another: 'Behold, this dreamer cometh.
ONK 37:19 And they said, a man to his brother, Behold, this master of dreams cometh.
PAL 37:19 And Shimeon and Levi, who were brothers in counsel, said each man to his brother, Behold, this master of dreams cometh.
 
GENESIS 37:20
JPS 37:20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.'
ONK 37:20 And now, come, we will kill him, and cast him into one of the pits; and will say an evil beast hath devoured him, and we shall see what will be the end of his dreams.

GENESIS 37:21
JPS 37:21 And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said: 'Let us not take his life.'

JPS 37:22 And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him'—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
ONK 37:22 And Reuben said, Do not shed blood; cast him into this pit in the wilderness, but stretch not forth a band against him,—that he might deliver him from their hands to bring him back to his father.

JPS 37:23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on him;

JPS 37:26 And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?

GENESIS 37:27
JPS 37:27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.
ONK 37:27 Come, and we will sell him to the Arabaee, and our hand shall not be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened to him.
PAL 37:27 Come, let us sell him to the Arabians, and our hands shall not be upon him to kill him; for our brother is our own flesh. And his brethren agreed.
 
GENESIS 37:28
JPS 37:28 And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.
ONK 37:28 And there passed by Midianite men (gabree Mid-ya-naee), merchants, and they drew and lifted up Joseph from the pit, and sold Joseph to the Arabaee for twenty of silver; and they brought Joseph into Mizraim.

JPS 37:29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
