Isaiah 40:1
JPS 40:1 Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, Saith your God.
TJBU 40:1 O ye prophets, prophesy comforts to my people, saith your God.
 
Isaiah 40:2
JPS 40:2 Bid Jerusalem take heart, And proclaim unto her, That her time of service is accomplished, That her guilt is paid off; That she hath received of the LORD'S hand Double for all her sins.
TJBU 40:2 Speak ye comfortably, to Jerusalem, and prophesy concerning her, that she shall be filled with the people of the captivity, because her sins are forgiven, for she hath received the cup of consolations from the Lord as if she had been smitten twice for all her sins.
 
Isaiah 40:3
JPS 40:3 Hark! one calleth: 'Clear ye in the wilderness the way of the LORD, Make plain in the desert A highway for our God.
TJBU 40:3 A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way before the people of the Lord; cast up a highway in the plain before the con gregation of our God.

JPS 40:4 Every valley shall be lifted up, And every mountain and hill shall be made low; And the rugged shall be made level, And the rough places a plain;

JPS 40:5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.'
TJBU 40:5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all the sons of flesh shall see together, that by the Word of the Lord it has been decreed thus.

JPS 40:6 Hark! one saith: 'Proclaim!' And he saith: 'What shall I proclaim?' 'All flesh is grass, And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field;
TJBU 40:6 The voice of one crying, Prophesy! He answered and said, What shall I prophesy? All the wicked are as grass, and all their strength as chaff of the field.
 
Isaiah 40:7
JPS 40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; Because the breath of the LORD bloweth upon it— Surely the people is grass.
TJBU 40:7 The grass withereth, its flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the wicked among a people are considered like grass.

Isaiah 40:10
JPS 40:10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come as a Mighty One, And His arm will rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His recompense before Him.
TJBU 40:10 Behold, the Lord God shall be revealed, and the strength of the arm of His might shall rule before Him: behold, the reward of those who perform His word is with Him, because their works are manifest to Him.
 
Isaiah 40:11
JPS 40:11 Even as a shepherd that feedeth his flock, That gathereth the lambs in his arm, And carrieth them in his bosom, And gently leadeth those that give suck.
TJBU 40:11 He shall feed those that are of His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and He shall carry the tender ones in His bosom; He shall lead gently those that give suck.

JPS 40:12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, And meted out heaven with the span, And comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, And weighed the mountains in scales, And the hills in a balance?
TJBU 40:12 He who hath promised these things, shall confirm them: He hath spoken it, and He will do it; He in whose sight all the waters of the world are accounted as a drop in the hollow of the hand, and the expansion of the heavens as if they had been prepared with tlie span; and the dust of the earth as if measured in a measure, and the mountains as if weighed in scales, and the hills in a balance.
 
Isaiah 40:13
JPS 40:13 Who hath meted out the spirit of the LORD? Or who was His counsellor That he might instruct Him?
TJBU 40:13 Who hath directed the Holy Spirit in the mouth of all the prophets? Is it not the Lord? He maketh known the words of His will to the righteous, the servants of His Word.
 
Isaiah 40:14
JPS 40:14 With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, And taught Him in the path of right, And taught Him knowledge, And made Him to know the way of discernment?
TJBU 40:14 I will make known wisdom to them who pray for it from Him, and I will teach them the way of justice; yea, He will give the law to their sons, and He will make known to their sons' sons the path of understanding.

JPS 40:15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, And are counted as the small dust of the balance; Behold the isles are as a mote in weight.

JPS 40:19 The image perchance, which the craftsman hath melted, And the goldsmith spread over with gold, The silversmith casting silver chains?
TJBU 40:19 Beholdy the artificer maketh an image, and the goldsmith overlayeth it with gold, and with silver chains the silversmith fasteneth it.
 
Isaiah 40:20
JPS 40:20 A holm-oak is set apart, He chooseth a tree that will not rot; He seeketh unto him a cunning craftsman To set up an image, that shall not be moved.
TJBU 40:20 He cuts a wild ash of the forest, which rottenness will seize; he procures a skilful artist to fix the image, that it be not moved.

JPS 40:21 Know ye not? hear ye not? Hath it not been told you from the beginning? Have ye not understood the foundations of the earth?
TJBU 40:21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath not the work in the creation been declared unto you in its order from the beginning? Have ye not understood that ye ought to fear Him, who hath created the foundations of the earth?

JPS 40:22 It is He that sitteth above the circle of the earth, And the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; That stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, And spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;
TJBU 40:22 Who maketh the Shekinah of His glory to dwell in exalted strength, and all the inhabitants of the earth are in His estimation as locusts; He that stretched out the heavens as a little thing, and spreadeth them out as the tent of the glory of the house of the Shekinah.
 
Isaiah 40:23
JPS 40:23 That bringeth princes to nothing; He maketh the judges of the earth as a thing of nought.
TJBU 40:23 Who gives princes over to weakness; the judges of the earth He bringeth to naught.
 
Isaiah 40:24
JPS 40:24 Scarce are they planted, Scarce are they sown, Scarce hath their stock taken root in the earth; When He bloweth upon them, they wither, And the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble.
TJBU 40:24 Although they multiply, although they increase, although their children become great in the earth, yet, nevertheless, He will send His wrath among them, and they shall be confounded: and His Word shall scatter them, as the whirl wind the chaff.

JPS 40:25 To whom then will ye liken Me, that I should be equal? Saith the Holy One.

JPS 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, And see: who hath created these? He that bringeth out their host by number, He calleth them all by name; By the greatness of His might, and for that He is strong in power, Not one faileth.
TJBU 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold, that ye may fear Him, who hath created these things, who bringeth forth the host of the heavens by number: He calleth them all by their name: on account of the combination of forces and might of power, not one is hindered in its orb.

JPS 40:27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, And speakest, O Israel: 'My way is hid from the LORD, And my right is passed over from my God'?
TJBU 40:27 Why sayesfh thou, O Jacob, and speakest, Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my cause is removed from my God?
 
Isaiah 40:28
JPS 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard That the everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Fainteth not, neither is weary? His discernment is past searching out.
TJBU 40:28 Hast thou not known? yea, hast thou not heard that the everlasting God, the Lord who hath created the foundations of the earth, is not fatigued, neither is weary? there is no end to His wisdom.
 
Isaiah 40:29
JPS 40:29 He giveth power to the faint; And to him that hath no might He increaseth strength.
TJBU 40:29 Who giveth wisdom to the righteous that long for the words of the law; and to those who have no strength, he multiplieth strength.
 
Isaiah 40:30
JPS 40:30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall;

Isaiah 40:31
JPS 40:31 But they that wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; They shall walk, and not faint.
