Our Comments: Jean Valjean starts off as a thief, is given the chance for a new life by a kindly bishop, starts his new life, his old life catches up, he starts over, still hounded by his past life, etc. This is a great film that shows how overzealous adherence to the law without mercy is cruel and in the end unsatisfying.
